And the winner is…

CAMPO

CAMPO

50 N. Sierra St., No. 104
Reno, NV 89501
The brainchild of famed Reno-Tahoe chef Mark Estee, this rustic neighborhood restaurants sits downtown overlooking the Truckee River. Campo means "gathering place," and the menu is determined by what's fresh and available, with the eatery wanting to be a force for local cuisine, but there will be a big Italian bent with pastas and a wood-fire pizza oven made in Naples. The menu differs throughout the day with dinner beginning at 5:30 p.m. and brunch on Sunday mornings. Happy hour is 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. seven days a week.

Nominees

Midtown Eats

719 S Virginia St
Reno, NV 89501
Salads, burgers, tacos, sandwiches and dinners are familiar and comforting, yes, but also thoughtfully prepared, often with a twist. The tri-tip and snapper tacos, built properly with double-stacked corn tortillas, are standouts. And so is the habanero sauce used here and there, one that we took at first glance for rouille or romesco -- until we dipped in and the habanero heat began its trademark rush. We are old Portland hands, from the days of Zefiro and Higgins when it was new, and Midtown Eats could have been scooped up from PDX and deposited on South Virginia.

Bowl

148 West St.
Reno, NV
A restaurant at the West Street Market serving new American cuisine, including vegan options, and run by Larry Dunning and Carlos Leon.

Men Wielding Fire

180 E. First Street
Reno, NV 89501
Located on the east edge of downtown, the longtime area caterers have an actual restaurant so you can now go to them any day of the week. The spot serves delicious barbecue from simple staples to extravagant St. Louis ribs. The menu also spans sandwiches, wraps, steaks -- almost any meat that tastes good over an open flame.

Last year's winner

775 Gastropub

775 Gastropub

5162 Meadowood Mall Circle
Reno, NV 89502
This is the reason we have a gastropub restaurant type in our database. The 775 has 200 beers on hand (pub) to go with unique bar food (gastro) made with Nevadan flair. They also infuse some of their own vodkas and grind their own burgers. The patio is nice and the inside is elegant, mixing cozy and class.
