Takeout menus show the restaurant's name as "Greek Café," but a banner hung above the door proclaims that "All American Cheesesteak & Greek Food/Gyros" are being served.
If you decide to stop in, look for the banner — that's what caught my attention as I drove by last week.
The café occupies a strip mall storefront on South Virginia Street at Neil Road, just south of Whole Foods Market and west across the street from Home Depot. The restaurant is casual, friendly, clearly a family-owned spot.
Cheesesteak sandwiches come in several styles: Philly-inspired, hoagie, pizza and more. There are also grilled and deep-fried chicken sandwiches.
But most of the menu — and for me, the biggest draw — encompasses familiar Greek and Mediterranean dishes like gyros, falafel, souvlaki, dolmas, hummus and kebabs (including chicken, filet and combos). Pita wraps are filled with beef, chicken, falafel or Caesar salad.
Gyros are standouts. The standard sandwich is constructed from tender meat, tzatziki sauce, tomatoes, onions and cucumbers; who needs more?
But if you do, there's also a spicy specimen incorporating a liberal application of hot sauce, and a Philly-style version piled with sautéed mushrooms, onions and provolone.
All three gyros feature soft, thick flatbread and a dash of the finger-licking messiness that makes eating gyros a hand-held pleasure.
