Wyclef wants a higher office; these 15 former musicians pulled it off
Fugees figurehead Wyclef Jean has long supported his native Haiti, but recently, he aimed to be more than a celebrity and fundraiser and launched a campaign to be president of the beleaguered Caribbean nation. But Jean's campaign was derailed by a combination of public disses (his former bandmate Pras said he wasn’t the one for Haiti’s future), rumors his Yele Haitian charity mishandled money, and eventually, disqualification from the Haitian electoral council.
But he’s far from the only musician who has entertained the idea of seeking higher office. Many even overcame the perception that self-involved musicians just don’t have the experience and skills to be effective leaders. Artists in the United States and abroad have held higher office, though often with mixed results. Here’s a gallery of musicians who didn’t just fight the law, but helped make it.—Patrick Sisson, Metromix
