Bahamas, 'Barchords'
It’s no surprise that the second album from Canadian singer-songwriter Afie Jurvanen, aka Bahamas, arrives on Jack Johnson’s Brushfire Records. Jurvanen’s music, like Johnson’s, is laid-back and beachy, with melodies as warm and inviting as sand between your toes. Unlike Johnson, Jurvanen also has a gift for hushed, wintry ballads (“Montreal,” “Snow Plow,” the latter featuring Feist on backing vocals) and some serious guitar chops—check out the long, smoldering solo that takes out “Your Sweet Touch.” No wonder his debut album was nominated for a Polaris Prize, Canada’s highest music honor. –AH
