Gotye, 'Making Mirrors'
2011 was a good year for the Belgian-born Australian multi-instrumentalist. The single for Gotye's third studio album—"Somebody That I Used to Know"—was a massive success down under, unseating Savage Garden's "Truly Madly Deeply" as the longest running song on the Australian charts, finding its way into the soundtracks of several angsty TV dramas, including "Gossip Girl," and inspiring a cavalcade of covers on YouTube. With an idiosyncratic groove, soaring vocals and matter-of-factly intimate lyrics, Gotye has the makings of an indie-pop success—someone primed for a little northern hemisphere love—though it remains to be seen if the rest of the album has the same kind of staying power. –LM
