"There’s a club called the Birdland, in Jackson, Mississippi. The club has been open since the 1940s, and it was one of the places where black people could come and perform and not have any problems. It only holds about 300 people max, but it’s just a feeling that you have in there, the spirit that you have in there—there’s really no other feeling like that.
