The top 10 films of 2011
By Geoff Berkshire, Metromix
Looking back at my favorite films of 2011, a recurring theme pops up: magic. Not just because the highest grossing movie of the calendar year (wizard world saga "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2") was also one of its best, but because there's always something magical about great movies. And this year so many of them seemed to acknowledge it.
From the Los Angeles screenwriter finding a portal to the past in "Midnight in Paris," to the Parisian boy unraveling a mystery of silent cinema in "Hugo"; a filmmaker pondering creation and existence in "The Tree of Life," to a movie star disappearing into the messy emotions of a father connecting with his children in "The Descendants," 2011's movie magic was big, small, tangible and elusive.
