Art museum throws last rooftop bash

There is something about Reno in September that seems so relaxing.  The days are cooler, the sun is setting a little earlier and somehow everyone knows they must enjoy the weather now before it snows.

The Nevada Museum of Art is using this mentality to its full advantage by hosting September’s First Thursday event on the roof for the last time this season. The roof of the NMA plays host not only to magnificent sculptures but also a spectacular views of downtown Reno.

First Thursday events include beer on tap from the Great Basin Brewery in Sparks and wine from the Vintage Wine Shop and Tasting Bar in Reno.  Local musician Dave Manning provides this week’s entertainment. Manning’s country twang and folk lyrics are accompanied by melodic piano melodies that create a sound evocative of the cowboy West.

Even though First Thursdays are great for social gatherings, the art is the real reason for going.  On display in the main gallery is “Mushrooms/Clouds” by Chris Drury.  Side exhibits include “Hummers” by Margarita Cabrera, which takes colorful drawings of the sports utility vehicle and turns them into politically and socially conscientious art.  Also on display are “The Hidden Light” by Dan Goods and “Stop The Car, Dad!” by Erik Lauritzen.

The last outdoor First Thursday begins at 5 and goes to 7 p.m. Cost is $10 for general admission, $8 for seniors and students, $4 for children and free for museum members. The NMA is at 160 W. Liberty St. in Reno. For more information, call 329-3333 or visit www.nevadaart.org.

The event finishes in time for you to enjoy the Uncorked wine walk, which benefits the Nevada Museum of Art as well as the California Ave. Merchants Association. Purchase a glass at the museum, Amendment 21 or World Board Shop and head to the Amendment 21 for a raffle at 9 p.m.
