Craig "Hot Lixx Hulahan" Billmeier is the world champion in an event that many don't even know has competitions. He is an air guitar grand master, aficionado and auteur, even.
And he's coming to Reno. He'll be at the weekly Friday Night Art Market that rocks the West Street Urban Market from 5 to 9 p.m. Hulihan's performance will also act as a giant promotion for the air guitar competition happening at the next week's art market on Sept. 12. If you've felt the itch to rock a fake ax on stage, there will never be a better time to pick up some pro tips. Hulihan actually does play real guitar in real bands (yes, plural), so there's no "why don't you learn a real instrument" heckling allowed.
Sonny Smith, a singer-songwriter from San Francisco, will also be on hand for his second performance in Reno. The man is know for his guitar work and winding lyrical tales, but he's somewhat of an arts renaissance man, at times a playwright, filmmaker and newspaper columnist.
Organizers the Holland Project have also brought in two local acts to round out the night's entertainment.
Buster Blue really is what swing sound like when its mixed in a blender with folk and borderline-legal energy supplements from GNC. Check out their instrument-packed performance at XOXO in January.
Ashley Costelloe of Sleepy Sunshine will play solo. Her sweetly pleading voice is not to be missed.
And as always, the market makes a return, and this week's theme is "Recycled Works!" Local artists will be showing their best stuff and food and drink are on hand as well. Art Night at the market has merged with Eco Night, so there also will be interactive environmental displays and lots of ways you can sign up to help if you're in the volunteering mood.
