Hip-hop will want to make you jump at Satellite on Tuesday nights.
Hip-Hop Tuesdays are a continuation of what was at the Green Room before it closed, where the turn tables spin and freestyler rappers are given their chance to take the mike up on stage. The late night gig starts about midnight and goes well into the wee hours of the morning, which is one of the most important things to know: Don’t go too early.
People seem to enjoy the nonsmoking smaller venue of Satellite better then the old Green Room. The venue has limited seating which encourages the crowd to be interactive. It’s up to the freestyler on stage to get the crowd amped. Also, the small stage may be less intimidating for first time freestylers.
The talent is respectful and respected. Some of Reno’s up and coming stars in the hip-hop genre can be found doing their thing, such as rapper Goodword, who just moved to Reno from San Francisco and is opening for the Sweatshop Union at Club Underground on Dec. 18.
Hip-hop radio show the Bombshelter’s very own Buddah and Dotkom, who have become house hold names in Reno hip-hop, spin the turn tables (some nights there are guest DJs) and help organize the night.
It’s a good place to go to hang out with your friends, and be sure not to expect a clubbing kind of atmosphere where dress-to-impress attire is required. There are typically a lot of couples and a lot of guys and people go for one main reason: the fun, spontaneous, for your soul, music. It costs $2, which is well worth the entertainment if you don’t have to wake up early the next morning or can function easily on a beat-infused hangover.
