The people who organize the Latin Thursday dancing events are using this pitch: "Ever wanted to be a Go-Go girl?" But that question has to be hypothetical, because who hasn't — especially for a $500 prize.

That's right, they kicked off a monthlong go-go dancer competition last Thursday night at Pearl Champagne Lounge. Initial sign-ups have been extended to this week because many people came to the regular dance party and figured they could do as well as the dancers who already were competiting. The goal is to find models/go-go dancers to perform at Latin Thursdays and promote the event elsewhere for a cool $50 an hour.

For those of us without go-go aspirations, the competition is open to the public and, as with every Latin Thursday event, is cover-free.

"I intend to never have a cover on Latin Thursdays," said BB Flanders, of Salsa Reno, one of the event leaders and dance instructors. "This is meant to be the 'locals' night. We have a lot of regulars and I want them to keep on coming."

The go-go dancer search happens alongside the normal dancing fun, so the music will keep going and you'll never have to miss a beat.

Contestants can register ahead of time by e-mailing Kassia of KM Marketing Reno at kmmarketingreno@gmail.com. On-site registration begins at 5:30 p.m.

And while they have women in mind, and only women are registered at this time, Flanders said, "If there’s a couple of guys who are really good dancers, I’m willing to give them a shot at it." Regardless of gender, the contestants will eventually be whittled down to 10 people who get special training, and the big winner will be announced at the finale party on October 30th.

Spectators should show up for the regular lesson at 7:30 p.m., and the first round of competition will be at 9:30 p.m.

Each week, the dancers will perform two at a time. The judging is done by the folks who will have to pay the winners, but a big part of selection is how dancers interact with the audience and the response they get, so come each week to show support for your favorites.

Last week, more than 300 people passed through the club, perhaps partly because of the $3 Bud beers, $3 tequila shots, $5 Caprinas and other drink specials, but mostly for the energetic dancing, which goes into the night.
